Activities Programs to bring TLLM to life

Pledge Event

A pledge event is an easy and fun way to introduce TextLess Live More to your community.

The event has two goals:

1. To educate people on the dangers of distracted driving and the TextLess Live More mission.

2. To inspire as many people as possible to take the pledge to never drive distracted.

How to host a pledge event:

Most pledge events take the form of ‘tabling’. This means that the pledge is an easy addition to pre-existing community events, such as fairs, sports games/matches, proms and dances, or even just a regular lunch hour. If you can set up a table, you can host a pledge event!

TextCheck

A TextLess TextCheck is designed to survey distracted driving at your school.

Over the course of a week, you will collect data about driver behavior in your community and measure the change effected by educational TextLess Live More events.

How to host a TextCheck:

On Day 1 (Monday), an observation committee stands at a safe, designated area to record 2 things:

1. the number of cars

2. the number of drivers who are distracted. This includes texting, Snapchat, changing music, or anything that requires one or both hands touching or holding a device.

After Day 1, you will host a TextLess Live More Pledge Event to educate your community about the dangers of distracted driving. Then, following the event, you will repeat the survey on Day 5 (Friday) to see if the education you provided had a measurable impact. Data from Day 1 is compared with data from Day 5 to measure the level of distracted driving and the changes.

Download the TextCheck Guide for everything you need to host a TextCheck and gather meaningful, accurate data. The steps are also outlined below.

To Do:  Before Day 1

  • Get permission! Coordinate with all appropriate authorities. Do not advertise that you are going to hold a distracted driving survey. To be successful, it must be a surprise for everyone on the road.
  • Plan observation times and the observation spot for both Monday and Friday. Choose a time when a high volume of vehicles are entering or exiting parking lots. Immediately before or after school typically works best. Regardless of what time you choose, you must use the same time slot on both days. Each observation should last between 30-60 minutes.
  • Assign a dedicated TextCheck survey team for each day. You need at least one recorder and two observers.
  • Download and print the TextCheck collection forms.

To Do: Day 1

  • Bring your TextCheck survey team to the predetermined observation spot.
  • Use the collection forms to track your results.
  • Safety is the first priority. Make sure your dedicated observation spot is not on the road. Always stand out of the road where drivers can clearly see you and wear bright clothing so that all drivers can easily spot you.

To Do: Between Day 1 and Day 5

  • Host a Pledge Event!

To Do: Day 5

  • Bring your TextCheck survey team to the same predetermined observation spot as Day 1.
  • Use the collection forms to track your results.
  • Compare your results from Monday to Friday on the TextCheck summary form. Did your TextLess Live More campaign make a difference? Report your findings by emailing joe@textlesslivemore.org.

Table Tents

Table tents are a habit-forming challenge to end digital dependence.

TextLess Live More Table Tents is a digital wellness exercise to encourage your community to break the cycle of digital dependence.

How to set up Table Tents:

This is a phone-free challenge to inspire people to put away their phones during lunch by placing small bins at the center of lunch tables. People place their phones in the bins while they eat and read the table tent cards with facts and prompts that encourage conversation and real-life connection.
